Noises during time travel events inside Winden Caves seemingly cause at least two type of animals to die:

  1. birds
  2. sheep

The following people have dead birds fall around them:

  • The Teens near Winden Cave prior to Mikkel's disappearance on the night of November 4th, 2019 [1]
  • Charlotte just outside the police station the night of November 5th, 2019 [2]
  • Egon when he returns to Farmer Alber's field the night of November 5th, 1986 [3]
  • Peter & Elisabeth in their car on the way to the bunker [4]
  • Charlotte when she on the bycicle in the woods when going to school [3]
  • When Helge is not found by his mother and before meeting Ulrich for the second time (when Ulrich will punch him), Helge has a dead bird in his box (5. Dark Season 1 Episode 8: "As you Sow, so You Shall Reap")

Both Helge and Charlotte collect the dead birds.

Mechanism[]

Every time a time anomaly happens in Winden, the wormhole inside the caves emits a loud sound that can be heard from miles. The frequency appears to be inaudible to people, unless they're close to the cave openings. It however affects animals - both sheep and birds had their eardrums ruptured.

Startled birds flee from the forest en masse, but the following electromagnetic pulse disrupts their sense of balance during flight, causing them to fall to their deaths.

At one time in 1986, the event has caused an entire herd of sheep to die abruptly in their pasture. Sheep, being very timid animals, apparently went into a state of panic, induced by the loud noise and subsequently died of extreme stress.

Other animals are presumably affected too, for instance dogs. However, only birds and sheep have been seen to be influenced by the time phenomenons in the series.
