How would you like to get more readers and editors onto your community? We’re building a new feature that we hope will do just that, and you can help shape it.
Over the last year, we’ve been working on a brand new feature - Community Builder, and we’ve identified a few wikis as the best candidates to have this first experience. And, your wiki is one of them! Why? Because it has a great structure for characters, seasons, episodes, etc! You can simply customize the page type to fit your needs. We designed the Community Builder from the start in mind to mirror that same structure.
This new layout is still early in its life, and we’re testing a bunch of ideas. We would be thrilled to have you help us learn how to make it even better! Would you be interested in joining us on this journey?
Before you give it a try, I would like to tell you some exciting key points about this tool:
Mobile capabilities: Community builder is designed to work across all devices, including desktop and mobile! It means you can create and view pages super easily. We want the fans of your community can contribute anytime and anywhere, no matter with their phones or their desktops. Simple and easy!
Structured data: All content on your community can display in a more powerful way. Visitors can easily find the information they want to read, and you can even present the information with less edits: by updating a single character page, you can have that data added to all other relevant pages automatically. How cool is that?!
Here is a great example how it looks like: Yellowstone wiki. Feel free to check it out!
I hope this has grabbed your interest. If you have any questions, ask away. If everything looks good to you, we’d love to switch you over to the new layout. Does this sound good to you? Please let me know and I will take care of the rest.
Hi 80XPD! I'm Mike with FANDOM's Community Development Team. I'd like to offer my help with organising and updating the main page. I see you have the main wordmark, header and background in place, but I can organise the main page to showcase necessary content like characters, trailers, and any social media and provide custom headers for the sections. Let me know what you think! For the time being, I'm going to start adding interlanguage links to our German and Spanish communities.
That would be great! Go right ahead. As you can see I've made a slight start, but it's nowhere near complete, so any help is much appreciated.
While we're on the subject, I assume you know a thing or two about design, so I'll ask you; If you look at the main page thus far, the headings and div boxes extend beyond their parent divs when set to 100% width. Why is that?
Thanks for the permission -- I'll start working up some changes soon. As for the overlapping issue, at a quick glance it might be because you have the width set to 100%. This might be causing the header (and by extension everything else) to extend beyond the bounds. I'll look into it in more detail and fix the issue for you.
Hmm. I thought the mainpage leftcolumn and rightcolumn tags were supposed to contain the content so everything is kept in place.
Anyways, I see that you and another user tried to add interwiki links. I assume it's not working because we have different urls (they have dark, we have dark-netflix). Is there a way to work around this?
Would it be possible to move this wiki to dark.wikia.com and the one that currently has the url to something else, if we talked to the admin or something? It's not an active community and I suspect most people will be looking for this wiki if they go to dark.wikia.com anyways, so it would make sense.
Generally they should, but sometimes formatting can override it and you have to play with the values a little bit. As for the interlanguage links, it should just be a caching issue on the English side. We create the interlanguage links and the wiki name doesn't matter in this case. If you look at the German Dark Wiki for instance, you see that the interlanguage works correctly and points to here. Sometimes it can take 24 hours for the links to work.
As for the moving issue, I'm exploring it from this end to see if moving the community is viable.
Hi 80XPD! I've worked up a new main page over on sandbox wiki. You can see the differences I've made, including adding a slider to the main page (currently thinking of linking to Dark, Jonas, Category:Characters, and Themes). I've increased the size of the character gallery a little (I've just no imaged everything to avoid uploading every image!). Also added a trailer section and Discussions section. I've made custom headers to each section so the overlap issue is gone. The big change is obviously changing the article background from white to black. I think it suits the style of the wiki/show better.
Great job, the content of the main page is perfect and I think the headings are very slick. However, I'm against dark backgrounds unfortunately. It makes text harder to read and puts a strain on the eyes, which is very important to consider on a site mostly compromised of, and focused on, text and information. I'd prefer a white main background with elements like infoboxes, tables, navboxes, main page headings and so on having a dark backgound (not black, black is for text only IMO).
Thoughts? Would you like to work up something based on that or do I have to get my own lazy ass into gear?
No worries – I'm here to support you and the vision you have for the wiki! I also dislike white text on black in generally, but I'm aware that others don't necessarily share the view so I try to do what looks/feels best. I'll inverse the colour scheme on my sandbox today and get back to you :)
I like it! Feel free to implement it here. Regarding the character "portal" boxes, I think making them bigger is a good idea, but they need to be in the correct format for the images to fit. I think I used a 16:9 crop, but I´m not entirely sure. Either that or I can resize the images when I get home to my own computer. We might wanna add some pops of color to the main page at some point, to make it more vibrant, but that can be done after the color scheme has developed more across the wiki. It´s good as is.
Thank you for the help and thanks for being so cooperative! :)
Okay, the new main page is live! The images don't look bad in the new ratio so they might not need tweaking.
As for the extra colors, I absolutely encourage you to constantly update the main page as the community grows and matures and I will be more than happy to help as needed. Thanks for the input on the design! If you need any more help or advice, then please do not hesitate to ask!
Are any of the ones working on this page the same as the ones working on http://de.dark.wikia.com ? The character sheets on that Wiki have some great functions and images. Is one of the aims to make the pages more similar to that one, or not.
I actually don't like throwing myself into discussions, but since I'm an admin of Dark Wikia DE, I just wanted to say that if you want, you can make a similar character gallery like ours, it's not a problem at all. (since @Themadpatter already asked)
I'm really looking forward to working with you guys because I think its important that there's a nice atmosphere between our Wikis.
The other ones use the following for a background, but wondering if there is a reason this one is not following the same design- background: #a5b5c6;opacity: 0.89; As an outsider that was looking for a proper English version of the German one, this one felt quite different, not really connected, and lacking in documents and photos already present in the German version. I prefer to understand the vision of this one prior to committing time to it.
The wikis are connected by their shared topic and naturally, will share some information, images and some collaboration will occur - which is great. However, they are two separate projects and one is not intended as a mere translation of the other. Some things will be done differently.
The vision of this wiki is to become the best english source for information about Dark. The German one has more information and photos indeed, while this one is more in development still. You're more than welcome to contribute! As for the background, I chose to keep it white for the sake of readability. Hope that answers your questions. :)
I think we should see how the community grows before adding more admins. For now, I don't see it as necessary. Also, you would need to make more contributions before adminship is considered. First and foremost you can help out by adding content and editing.
Well I'm contributing a lot. I'm happy to. Once I finish I'll help do the write ups on articles. I'm going to be a major contributor to this wiki. I'm a new mod over at /r/DarkTV and I'm helping them get things running. It's great. We've got a community over there, I'll add the wiki in the sidebar.
Hey, I put the wiki in the sidebar and I did a lot of work for you today. I uploaded an image and forgot to name it, but since I don't have admin perms I can't rename it or delete it. So if you want to do that you can. I'm going to continue to work on the wiki and make it better.
You've done a lot of work indeed! Great job on laying the groundwork for all the episode articles, and thanks for adding the link on the subreddit. That will help a lot in attracting new contributors. Keep up the good work!
Re: the file you uploaded, I assume you meant "E2 result.jpg" so I renamed it to "Lies.jpg", as I saw you named the other ones after their episode title. Is that correct? :)
That's pretty neat. It's pretty hard to keep track of who's who and their relations with so many characters and things going on. I'm thinking of creating family trees on the wiki too, but I have many plans so that's a project for the future.
What do you think we should prioritize first? I think we should focus on adding plot summaries with images to episode pages, and creating pages for all the characters with a brief introduction, infobox and image from each time period. Following that, I think it would be good if we can "complete" at least one page of each category/type (episode, character, item, location, theme, mystery etc..) so we can establish the format of the pages and the wiki.
