"No one can enter the dead zone. Any attempt will be punished by death. Those are the rules. We are the future! Sic Mundus Creatus Est!"
Elisabeth Doppler, as interpreted by Silja Tiedemann[src]

Elisabeth Doppler's cult is an armed band of soldiers and Sic Mundus worshippers in the 2050s who inhabit the ruins and surrounding forest of the post-apocalyptic Winden.

After being transported from 1986 to 2052 by touching the 1953 Helge Doppler through the time portal in the bunker, Jonas Kahnwald is captured by the group and eventually joins them.[2][3] The group takes its orders from a grown-up Elisabeth with a weather-beaten face; she is deaf, and so relies upon Silja to interpret for her.[2]

How the group has been able to survive in the wasteland for thirty-three years is unclear, as well as any reason why they should remain there. The air is patrolled by unidentified helicopters, which they sometimes avoid. However, given that the entire world was afflicted by the apocalypse, the living situation is likely little different elsewhere.[4] The group appears be in conflict with other groups of irregulars, as the members are heavily armed. Jonas steals diesel fuel from one of these other groups (and is nearly spotted) in a dangerous, highly orchestrated ruse.[5]

Beliefs and goals[]

Elisabeth knows about the dark matter inside the former cooling chamber, and decries it as something from the devil. She believes they must not venture inside, but wait for the "prophecy" to be fulfilled that will allow things to return to the way they were before. [6]

The group actively works to prevent anyone from entering the grounds of the former Winden Nuclear Power Plant, upon penalty of death. Two Frenchmen were caught attempting to make their way in, and were hanged as a result.[3] Jonas himself was caught crawling out from under the barrier wall and immediately apprehended. Put to the noose in the usual spot, Jonas accuses Elisabeth of lying to the others and orders she show them what's in the dead zone. Elisabeth shoots him in the leg. He shouts utter heresy, claiming that the passage will not open and that paradise does not exist. It is not clear how much of this Elisabeth picks up through lips, but with such an anger as though she understood it all, she kicks the beam out from under Jonas's feet. After letting him hang for a few moments, however, she shoots the rope, saving him, and he is imprisoned.[5]
