Baran bo Odar is a German director and screenwriter. He and his partner, Jantje Friese, are the co-creators of Dark. Odar has directed every episode of Dark, and is credited as a writer on a significant number of episodes. In July 2020, after the final season of Dark, he and Friese began developing a new mystery series on Netflix, titled 1899, which was canceled after the first season, though this was not the end of their collaboration with Netflix. In February 2023, bo Odar and Friese were tapped as showrunners and writers for the Netflix original supernatural drama, Something Is Killing the Children.

He grew up in Erlangen, Bavaria, and studied at HFF München (Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film München, University of Television and Film of Munich), where he met Friese.

His first film, '"The Silence (German: Das letzte Schweigen), was released in 2010. Based on the novel Das Schweigen, it concerns the investigation into the disappearance of a young girl 23 years after another girl was raped and murdered, and the lives of the suspects.

Odar's next film was the 2014 film Who Am I [No system Is Safe] (German: Who Am I – Kein System ist sicher), a techno-thriller about a Berlin-based computer hacking group, sometimes compared to Mr. Robot. Who Am I won three German Movie Awards as well as teh Bambi award for best German film.

In 2017, he directed Sleepless, a crime thriller starring Jamie Foxx as Vincent Downs, a corrupt Las Vegas police officer whose son is kidnapped. An American remake of the 2011 French film Sleepless Night (French: Nuit Blanche), the film received mostly negative reviews.
